It is very common for head injured, TBI, concussion, and persistent post concussive patients to suffer from photophobia and hyperacusis. Both of these troubling conditions can affect the quality of life for not only the concussion patient, but also their family.
Hyperacusis, a hearing disorder, is where sounds others perceive as normal seem uncomfortable and unbearable. Sound reducing earplugs can help concussion patients deal with the sound stimuli that is percieved as uncomfortable.
Photophobia is sensitivity to light, especially bright light, which can cause discomfort or pain. One of the best ways to help photophobia is to wear special colored lenses that help filter out the light that causes the photophobia. Medical professionals have knick-named these glasses as "concussion glasses".
OTC "concussion glasses" and sound reducing earplugs aren't usually covered by insurance. Families who are having to deal with these concussion symptoms have to often take on extra expenses from the many different treatments of a head injury. This is why the Nuggets of Gratitude program was born. We understand that the family's budget becomes strained when a family member has to either stop working or limit their hours and also pay for healthcare expenses that were unexpected or that are not covered by insurance.
WCCAG, through fundraising and private donations, can provide over the counter sound reducing earplugs and over the counter concussion glasses to qualified applicants.
WCCAG is offering head injured, concussion, TBI, and persistent post concussive patients a pair of free concussion glasses and/or sound reducing earplugs who are in financial need while supplies & funding lasts to help increase their tolerance to light and sound stimuli.
